KU Culinary Arts Programs

Students learn to prepare a variety of dishes in kitchens with 10:1 teacher-to-student ratios. They also work with professional chefs and gain a better understanding of the industry. They develop a greater appreciation for food as culture, art and health.

KU has many traditions that make it a unique place to study. Some of them are fun, while others are more serious.

Pizza Shuttle

Pizza Shuttle is a no-frills counter-serve joint with creative pizza options and late-night delivery. The restaurant serves a wide variety of pizza flavors and offers vegetarian options for those with dietary restrictions. The restaurant also offers a variety of desserts to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Employees love working at the restaurant because they feel like part of a family. They often stay long after closing to keep serving customers. Some even volunteer to help out on busy nights. The staff also receives perks, such as free tickets to Brewers games and cash bonuses.

The owners plan to transition the business into employee ownership, with New York-based Teamshares overseeing the process. This firm helps small and medium-sized businesses take the leap into employee ownership, offering stock and helping employees become financially fluent through software and education. Gold and Siecinski will hire a president to manage day-to-day operations, while Jessica Gold will serve as general manager and handle many of the same responsibilities.

Sylas & Maddy’s

Minnesota expats Cindy and Jim England opened Sylas & Maddy’s in 1997, with a second store opening in Olathe years later. Named after their four-legged best friends, the shop is a local favorite. The Englands put a lot of love into each scoop, and it shows.

They offer more than 150 rotating flavors, including simple Sweet Cream, spirited Hawk Tracks (peanut butter drops and brownies), festive Birthday Bash and classy Strawberry Cheesecake. They also have sorbets, such as mango with chile and creamy pistachio.

The popularity of the shop can be witnessed on a summer day when KU students line up down Massachusetts Street to get a scoop. The top-selling flavor is Da Bomb, blasted with cookie dough and Oreos and hand-stirred into a luscious sweet vanilla cream base. They serve it in a buttery waffle cone and also make freezes, drinks with homemade sherbet as the main ingredient. Sylas & Maddy’s is a great place to bring the family for a treat or to celebrate any occasion.

KU Alumni Association

Culinary arts is more than just cooking and preparing food. It’s about creating a dining experience that will leave a lasting impression on the customer. This process requires a lot of hard work and skill. It also involves a lot of training and practice. It’s important to choose a good program that will give you the best chance of success.

While sporting events and happy hours remain popular tools for alumni engagement, data suggests that today’s graduates need more tangible career-related support from their schools. Learn how KU’s alumni association has stepped up to meet these evolving needs.

Heath, a Hugoton native, works on behalf of 350,000 members to strengthen the University and connect Jayhawks worldwide. He leads engagement initiatives for KU’s broad array of programs, benefits and services. When he’s not working, he enjoys spending time with his wife and three young children. The Jayhawk Career Network

The KU Alumni Association’s focus on “Jayhawks Flocking Together” is delivering real, meaningful and life-changing benefits through programs like the Jayhawk Career Network, KU Mentoring+ and KU Connection. Thanks to the generosity of Rock Chalk Forever donors, the Alumni Association can continue to expand and innovate these virtual and social networking opportunities for current students and alumni.

JCN has been able to connect Jayhawks through innovative programs such as a winter job-hunting boot camp and an online webinar on remote work wellness. JCN has also expanded KU Mentoring+ to include connections based on career interests, affinity and location, and has provided additional avenues for students and alumni to engage with one another, including at events like Kyou Networking Day.

The Association also works closely with the Office of Admissions to provide engagement opportunities for prospective students and their families, including personalized campus visits and alumni volunteer mentorships. JCN also provides support to legacy students through its Student Alumni Network and alumni through KU Leads, which recently took seven student-athletes on a career industry trip to Arthrex global headquarters in Naples, Florida.
